🎮【Workshop+ Speech】 Join Us for Two Inspiring Events by Professor Dmitri Williams from USC Annenberg!
College of Communication is honored to welcome Professor Dmitri Williams, a leading expert in communication, gaming, and data science, for two exciting events at NCCU!
🎤 5/26 (Mon) Workshop: 《Working with Industry Data》
Abstract:Dr. Williams runs two research labs at USC Annenberg that house about 20 PhD students and two faculty colleagues. One is dedicated to games research and the other to the study of influence through what is called Social Value. In each case, the labs primarily work with data provided by industry partners. In this workshop, Dr. Williams will describe how the labs are run, but also how he has been able to negotiate, gather, manage, and leverage the data, including issues of NDA, university layers, academic freedom, and project planning. There is a combination of practical planning, vision setting, mentoring, and management required to drive a broad range of projects while keeping companies, colleagues, students, and university lawyers all happy.

🎤 5/27 (Tue) Speech: 《The Importance of Other People: Findings from Games and Beyond》
Abstract:The Communication discipline assumes that we impact each other, and that other people matter to us. This research tradition stretches back to the middle of the last century, yet systematically capturing this effect has been challenging. Now, in a world awash in data and with new techniques, there are ways to understand connections with network analysis and machine learning. In this talk, Dr. Williams will share a method that has been established to measure the causal impact of one person on another using unobtrusive behavioral data from a wide range of sources. Dr. Williams will show what has been found using game data as a baseline, and then expand into retail, donations, and investing, continually addressing the empirical question “How important are other people?” Depending on the interests of the audience, the methods, theoretical frameworks, and practical applications within both the academy and industry can be explored.
🕒 Time: 5/27(二) 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
